What is POSITIVE PERFORMANCE® Management?
POSITIVE PERFORMANCE® Management, or PPM, is an approach for developing and improving performance that treats people as responsible adults. Organizations learn to systematically develop and manage performance, thus meeting the challenges related to people and their performance that occur in every organization.
How does PPM work?
POSITIVE PERFORMANCE® Management replaces or enhances existing performance management practices with an approach that establishes clear expectations, with coaching and feedback to foster good performance. PPM stresses personal responsibility, open communication, mutual respect, teamwork, results, and relationships.
Key aspects of this system include:
- coaching to continuously encourage good performance
- recognition and encouragement to inspire better performance
- counseling to address minor performance issues in an adult-oriented, professional manner
- establishing clear expectations tied to company objectives
- correcting substandard performance through the use of a nonpunitive corrective system
How does PPM differ from traditional performance management models?
Like traditional systems, POSITIVE PERFORMANCE® Management communicates expectations, provides recognition, holds people accountable, and ensures defensibility when formal action or discharge is required. It does so, however, based upon an entirely different process and rationale.
Traditional performance management seeks compliance, command, and control by way of rules, regulations, and "carrot and stick" incentives. POSITIVE PERFORMANCE Management® works toward positive results and relationships through a collaborative process emphasizing continuous development and personal responsibility.
POSITIVE PERFORMANCE® Management gives managers the tools to help people improve regardless of their current performance. Managers and leaders learn how to influence results and build strong relationships across the entire spectrum of associates.
What kind of results have organizations seen from using PPM?
Texas A&M University, Excell Agent Services, the Texas Department of Human Services, Texas MHMR, Sprint PCS, MFS/WorldCom, and CapRock Communications are just some of the PPM users that have reported positive results, including improved retention, stronger relationships between managers and employees, and improved customer service.
Why should I adopt PPM?
Organizations that adopt PPM have often discovered that they were not consistently developing people to succeed in the future, promoting strong relationships, or addressing performance problems effectively. This includes managers that concentrate on the few people who perform poorly; do not encourage or provide the tools for those who do a good job each day; and are ineffective when addressing performance problems. Also, the rate of change in virtually every industry requires organizations to continually develop new skills and capabilities for the future. POSITIVE PERFORMANCE Management is a helpful tool in meeting the challenges ahead.
Do you guarantee results?
We guarantee that your POSITIVE PERFORMANCE Management system will meet all applicable legal standards; that we will conduct ourselves to the highest professional standards; and that we will complete the agreed upon project to your satisfaction.
Since your organization is responsible for the actual implementation of the system and skills, it is impossible to guarantee specific results. We will, however, do something that very few consultant groups will match --- put a portion of our compensation at risk based on your results. We call it Partnership Pricing™. The brief overview is that we will work with you to agree on specific activities, performance measures, and evaluation criteria for the project. An agreed upon fee will be attached to the measures, and our normal fees will be adjusted to reflect that agreement. Here's a warning --- very few organizations take us up on this option. They usually do the math and realize that they will pay much more based on the results. Ask us about the organization that reduced turnover by 30% in one year.
What role does Pennington Performance Group play in PPM?
Pennington Performance Group initiates the change process with a client by learning about existing polices, practices, corporate culture, and objectives. It then collaborates on the design and implementation of a POSITIVE PERFORMANCE® Management system particular to that organization's needs.
Pennington Performance Group will manage the entire process to ensure success. Management of the process includes activities such as
- involving individuals throughout the organization in design of the new system
- building understanding, support, and commitment
